What is the EUDR?
In short, the EUDR (European Union Deforestation Regulation) is a European Union regulation aimed at preventing products that contribute to deforestation and forest degradation worldwide from entering the EU market. The EUDR introduces an obligation for companies to ensure that products such as soya, oil palm, beef, coffee, cocoa and, most importantly, wood and products containing its components such as board, plywood, cardboard, waste paper or paper. If a company produces or trades in these products, they must provide evidence regarding how their supply chain complies with EUDR requirements, which aims to protect global forest resources and biodiversity.
Until when do companies have time to comply with the EUDR regulation?
The EUDR (European Union Deforestation Regulation) has different implementation deadlines for large and small companies.
Who will oversee the EUDR in Poland?
European Union member states have until 30 December 2024 to announce the appointed organisations that will oversee the implementation and enforcement of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in companies.
Does a company's possession of an FSC CoC certificate automatically guarantee compliance with the EUDR regulation?"
The FSC system implemented in a company can help the company to comply with the EUDR Regulation but does not automatically ensure full compliance.
The FSC system has developed a regulatory module on EUDR, which is an integral part of FSC's efforts to support FSC-certified companies in complying with the requirements of the EU Regulation on the Prevention of Deforestation (EUDR). This module is designed to enable companies to extend their existing FSC CoC certificate to include additional EUDR-compliant requirements.
With FSC's EUDR regulatory module, companies can strengthen their supply chain management procedures, particularly in terms of traceability of raw materials such as wood and other products that may contribute to deforestation. This module requires companies to additionally document/develop detailed procedures and verify them to ensure that all products entering the supply chain are free from deforestation and forest degradation.
The extension of the FSC CoC standard to include a regulatory module on EUDR enables companies to meet the requirements of the regulation more effectively by integrating additional controls and audits and aligning company policies with the new requirements. FSC also supports companies in the education and implementation of the regulatory module to ensure effective and legally compliant forest and environmental protection activities.
