Faced with the scale of pollution, scarcity of natural resources, loss of biodiversity and global warming resulting from increasing levels of consumption, the textile industry-like many other sectors-is undergoing a transformation.
The production of fibers and textiles requires the consumption of large amounts of water. Disposal of the chemicals used in the process leads to unprecedented pollution of soil and water bodies. Another problem is the microplastics contained in artificial synthetic fibers – energy-intensive, CO2-emitting and non-biodegradable.
Certification systems in which companies meet certain standards help manage supply chain sustainability.
This is especially true in an era of conscious consumption, where purchasing decisions are becoming increasingly dependent on certifications and labels proving that companies are operating in accordance with the idea of environmental best practices.
The world’s leading standard for sustainable textile processing – GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) guarantees that certified organic fiber products have been produced with respect for the environment and workers’ rights. It covers all stages of production of products made from natural fabrics (mainly cotton, wool and silk) – from raw material to finished product (every stage of the supply chain is checked here). GOTS takes environmental and social issues into account!
