What is FSC certification and who is it for?

What does the FSC® certificate attest to?

FSC certification is an attestation that a certified entity can sell certified raw materials, semi-finished goods or products.

What types of FSC certificates are there?

We can encounter two types of FSC certificates. The FSC FM (Forest Management) certificate is only for forest or forest plantation managers. There is also the FSC CoC (Chain of Custody) chain of custody certificate. The FSC CoC certificate is awarded to wood and paper companies that want to sell FSC-certified products.

For whom is the FSC CoC certificate intended?

The FSC CoC certificate is awarded to sawmills, carpenters, furniture companies, traders, chipboard manufacturers as well as paper and board manufacturers or printers.

It certifies that the wood or wood fibres used in the production of a particular product come from certified forests. Certified forests are those that are managed in accordance with FSC requirements.

The FSC CoC certificate is intended for all timber and paper industry operators that come into legal possession of certified raw materials or products. Companies that process, label or repackage certified raw materials or products and that issue a sales invoice for a certified product must certify themselves in order to sell the certified product.

Trading companies involved in the B2B supply chain, i.e. whose customer will be another company in the supply chain, also fall under the scope of FSC certification. This refers to all trading companies, even those that do not repackage their goods or take physical possession of them, and trade only by shipping goods directly from the supplier to the recipient.

Who does not need an FSC certificate?

Only retailers, i.e. trading companies that are at the end of the supply chain and whose customers are end consumers, are not covered by FSC certification, and the only certification with which they will sell an FSC-certified end product will be the logo on the product, not the FSC statement on the sales invoice.

Companies that provide services to other certified companies that do not take ownership of certified products also do not need an FSC certificate. This includes, for example, sales agents and auction houses that organise trade in certified products between buyer and seller, transport service providers or subcontractors who settle with a service invoice.

When does the supply chain break down?

Any company involved in the supply chain that does not have its own FSC certificate breaks the chain of custody. This means that such goods cannot be certified. This is because each certified company uses an individually assigned FSC certificate number and an FSC statement on sales invoices, which are the only evidence of the sale of a certified product. It is not possible to use the FSC certificate number assigned to the product supplier.

Precisely for this reason, purchasing goods from a non-certified company will always be a purchase without FSC certification.

FSC annual audits

The FSC certificate number is issued by an accredited certification body after a successful certification audit. The certificate is issued for 5 years, but a control audit is required every year. During the control audits, the company accounts for its annual balance sheet, i.e. the amount of raw material purchased and FSC products sold. During the periodic audits, each certified company must demonstrate that it does not sell more certified products than the purchase invoices indicate.

Benefits of FSC certification

FSC certification is an investment to remain competitive in the paper and wood industry.

Did you know that FSC certification:

  • allows the sale of products with the FSC logo;
  • enables control of the flow of raw materials through the supply chain;
  • helps to meet the requirements of the European EUTR regulation, which prohibits the placing of illegally harvested timber on the European market;
  • guarantees that the company uses wood from certified, responsibly managed forests;
  • confirms the company’s compliance with the highest social and environmental standards;
  • helps to meet the requirements of the largest shop chains as well as Western customers;

FSC secures cooperation with major players

Nowadays, attention to creating responsible business is gaining importance. Customers are increasingly environmentally conscious and are guided by their world view when choosing products from the shop shelves. Therefore, to meet customer expectations, the major retail chains are introducing environmental policies for their suppliers. The environmental policies of major corporations indicate FSC as the preferred certification system for wood and paper products. This is why, in many cases, having an FSC certificate for their products is the only guarantee of cooperation with the largest buyers in the market.
